Paul’s Eschatological Use of Numbers in Second Timothy

Here is the abstract of Brandon Elder’s article.

Abstract

This paper aims to further explore the manner in which Paul employs Old Testament Scripture within his second letter to Timothy. Specifically, this paper finds the quotation and allusion to Korah’s rebellion contained within the story of Moses to be of special importance. The research already completed surrounding this reference will be presented, followed by a synthesis and an offered solution as to where the evidence leads. Ultimately, we will find that Paul, instead of loosely quoting some obscure Old Testament story, relies heavily on an established tradition and way of thinking about Korah’s rebellion that has lost some of its significance today. We will discover that Paul highlights an important eschatological element of the Resurrection during his argument against the opponents within his second letter to Timothy.
